Dr. April Vari

Delaware Valley College has announced the appointment of Dr. April L. Vari as vice president for student affairs. Dr. Vari comes to DelVal from Dickinson College, where for the last seven years she has served as the senior student affairs officer, first as dean of students and then as the vice president for student development.

“April brings a high level of expertise and leadership to our student affairs division,” said College President Dr. Joseph S. Brosnan. “From a candidate pool of more than 110 student affairs professionals, April’s credentials made her stand out. She has extensive accomplishments in creating and sustaining innovative student programs, and a deep understanding of the trends in higher education and how students are impacted.”

Addressing the needs of students and continuing the progress and momentum achieved by retiring VPSA John Brown in supporting student success will be Dr. Vari’s immediate goals. With the recent move of intercollegiate athletics and intramurals to the student affairs area, Dr. Vari will also work very closely with newly appointed athletic director Steve Cantrell to more fully and intentionally integrate athletics into the College’s commitment to academic quality and to find ways to involve more student-athletes in the campus community and activities.

“I am so honored and excited to be joining the Delaware Valley College community,” Dr. Vari said. “Throughout the course of my interviews and campus visit I got the clear impression that this is a special place where people are committed to working together to achieve exciting new goals for the College. I’m eager to get started!”

In her leadership role at Dickinson, Dr. Vari served as a senior officer of the college, developing and advancing the college’s strategic objectives. As the chief student affairs officer, she was responsible for overseeing 15 departments and functional areas including health services, intramurals and recreation, residence life, diversity initiatives and community service.

Prior to her work at Dickinson, Dr. Vari served as an assistant dean, associate dean and dean of student development at Moravian College. She received a B.A. in economics from Dickinson, her M.Ed. in counseling and personnel services from the University of Maryland, and a D.Ed. in educational leadership/leadership studies from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Vari is a member of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, the International Leadership Association and the American College Personnel Association.

Dr. Vari will begin her new position at DelVal on Monday, July 8.
