Delaware Valley College’s Philadelphia Flower Show exhibit takes multiple awards

Delaware Valley College’s exhibit in the Philadelphia Flower Show won multiple awards this year and will be on display until March 10 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

The Philadelphia Flower Show is the largest and longest-running indoor flower show in the world.

Students help design, build and staff the exhibit each year.

The show opened March 2. This year’s theme is “Brilliant,” and features a variety of displays related to British culture and history. One display uses flowers to create representations of the Crown Jewels. Another uses flowers to interpret songs by the Beatles. Other displays feature a tea party from “Alice in Wonderland,” a sculpture garden that comes to life, and a huge floral gate, which even has bars made of tubes of flowers.

DelVal’s exhibit, “Sherlock Holmes: The Mystery of Dr. Black’s Garden,” allows participants to play detective. Participants have a chance to help Sherlock indentify species of invasive plants and insects that may surround their own homes. Part of the display is a tunnel or “garden of death” with black lights that participants can walk through.  The tunnel highlights different invasive species, which glow under the lights.

The exhibit won a Special Achievement Award for a Unique Design Feature or Element from the Garden Club Federation on Pennsylvania. DelVal also won the Best Achievement in Plant Education Award.

Students in DelVal’s Flower Show course work with other students, alumni, faculty and staff volunteers on the exhibit.

The students in the Flower Show course are graded on everything from design to set up, and even being at the show.
